Temporary Health Conditions

Iowa State University recognizes students may have absences related to illness, medical care, funerals, or other situations that can impact attendance and coursework. In these instances, it is the responsibility of the student to work with their instructors to discuss ways to meet course expectations - see Emergency Notifications for more information. Students are responsible for informing instructors of their need to be absent from class for unscheduled events (i.e. sudden illnesss, etc.) or medical appointments - we suggest contacting each instructor by email to advise of absence and initiate related communication (see Communication Tips for Students for some important suggestions and guidance related to communicating with instructors).

When an absence is related to injury, post-surgical limits, etc. that may impact participation in coursework, Student Disability Resources can communicate with Instructors. This is only possible if the student provides valid evidence to Student Disability Resources staff that supports a need for absence and/or important necessary assistance. In these cases, SDR staff will issue an email to instructors which will provide direction on ways to assist the student. The student will also be provided a letter to hand-deliver to instructors.

The established process for temporary assistance related to injuries is as follows:

  • Student contacts SDR by phone 515.294.7220 or by email disabilityresources@iastate.edu to explain their situation and set up an in-person Welcome Meeting with staff.
  • When an in-person meeting is not possible, the student will communicate with SDR staff by phone to learn about the process and discuss related topics.
  • Student will provide evidence of the situation (i.e. medical documentation) to SDR staff to support their request for assistance.
  • SDR staff will complete appropriate communications and provide the student with letters to deliver to Instructors. This communication outlines recommended ways to provide assistance to the student.

For example, a student slips on the ice and fractures their dominant hand making it impossible to write. After meeting with the student, SDR staff may ask the instructor to assist the student by providing access to lecture notes.
